[B. Unit 10. Witches]

1. The infamous Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.

1) 세일럼 마녀 재판은 1692년 봄, 메사추세츠주에 있는 세일럼 마을의 한 무리의 소녀들이 악마에 씌였다고 주장하고 여러 지역 여성을 마녀로 고발하면서부터 시작되었다.

2) possess는 “무언가에 씌이다“라는 의미로 사용되었다.
The young girl was possessed by the devil, and she had to undergo an exorcism to be freed.

3)
I possess a large collection of books. 나는 많은 양의 책을 소유하고 있다.
She possesses a great talent for music. 그녀는 음악에 대한 엄청난 재능을 지니고 있다.
She possesses the knowledge to solve this problem. 그녀는 이 문제를 해결하기에 충분한 힘을 가지고 있다.

2. Though the Massachusetts General Court later annulled guilty verdicts against accused witches and granted indemnities to their families, bitterness lingered in the community, and the painful legacy of the Salem witch trials would endure for centuries.

1) 매사추세츠 주 대법원이 나중에 고발된 마녀들에 대한 유죄 판결을 취소하고 피고인 가족들에게 보상금을 지급했지만, 지역 사회에는 여전히 비통함이 남아 있었고, 살렘 마녀 재판의 고통스러운 유산은 수세기 동안 지속될 것이다.
